How to know when it's time to scrap your car

There is a multitude of reasons why it might be time to scrap your car. Perhaps it’s old and isn’t running like it used to, or maybe you don’t use your car a lot and it's just sitting collecting dust on the driveway? Nonetheless, there are many reasons why - other than your car being written off in an accident – you may decide to scrap your car. So with this in mind, what are the most common signs it’s time to send your car to the scrap yard?

It’s costing too much to run

We all know that running a car is expensive. There’s the cost of fuel, paying insurance and tax, and keeping the vehicle looking spick and span. Not to mention any repairs that may need completing or MOTs. When you take all of these factors into account, this can add up to a lot of money every year. Some people may not even use their cars that often and are stuck paying out all of these different charges. In this case, it may be more efficient to scrap your car and use alternative forms of transport, as depending on the condition of your vehicle, you may turn out a small profit at the scrap yard.

Repairs are too costly

If a car fails its MOT, it's likely that the list of things to fix is a mile long, and garages aren’t cheap either. In cases such as this, it's common for many people to consider scrapping their cars instead. Why pay out for a car that will take more to fix than what it's worth? You could even put the money from scrapping your vehicle towards buying a new car.

The emissions are too high

In a world that’s becoming much more aware of global warming and its impact on the environment, you may decide it's time to do something about your own carbon footprint. The first place to look is your car. If you have an older model, it may be releasing harmful levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide, among others. Scrapping your car and purchasing a greener alternative, such as an electric model, could be the best way forward.
