Should you scrap your car or sell it for parts?
When your car reaches the end of its life, it can be a difficult choice what to do with it. Do you try and salvage some of the working and useful parts? Or do you just scrap the whole thing? At Motorwise, we're highly experienced vehicle recyclers, and as such here are some of the things we think you need to consider when making your choice.
Are the parts in demand?
If you're considering selling parts from your vehicle, you need to establish whether or not there's any demand for those parts. If your vehicle is reasonably rare, or no longer in production, there may be a ready market out there who could use certain parts of your vehicle. If it was mass-produced with a thriving aftermarket, however, the odds of you finding ready buyers are minimal.
Have you got the space spare?
Selling a car for parts takes time, so you need to have somewhere out of the way you can store the vehicle. It may take months for people to pick over the pieces that they want - all that time the vehicle is still going to be yours, and it's still going to be taking up space on your property. For most of us, with busy lives and parking space at a premium, this means breaking your car for parts is simply not a practical option. It's much more convenient to scrap the whole car in one go.
Will a scrap merchant take the rest?
When you're finished parting out the car, it's not as easy as you think to get a scrap merchant to take the rest of the carcass off your hands. Cars are assessed on scrap value based on weight, rather than the condition, mileage, year, spec, or any other factor that normally determines a car's price. That means that the more parts that are missing from your car, the less valuable it is in scrap. You may be willing to take less money for the bones of the car, but finding a willing scrap merchant might be difficult - if your car has been extensively parted it may not be worthwhile for the scrap merchant to collect and process it.
