If you’ve never previously had cause to scrap a vehicle then the idea of doing so might be a little overwhelming. It is often difficult to step into situations or scenarios with which one has no prior knowledge, but in this guide, we’ll talk you through what you should do, what you should avoid, and everything in between. What NOT to do

It might be tempting to try and give the car scrapper a bit of a hand by taking your vehicle apart, but this is rarely – if ever – a good thing to do. This is liable to be incredibly dangerous and could also lead to you damaging parts that would otherwise be valuable. Vehicles contain with them an array of harmful chemicals, and if you are not well-versed in mechanics, could damage both you and the surrounding environment.

You should also be very wary of who you actually sell the vehicle to. While the majority of scrap dealers are entirely reputable, there are some that are looking for a quick buck, and will not think twice about offering you less than your vehicle is worth. Dealers who only pay in cash usually fit into this category. Also, remember that you absolutely need a Certificate of Destruction, so if this isn’t offered or the dealer says they don’t issue them, then they are likely to be a bit dodgy.

What to do

You should head to your chosen scrap dealer during the first few weeks of the month. Many scrap yards – though this is by no means universal – tend to take many more bookings at the end of the month compared to the start. This might not be true everywhere, but it makes sense that scrap dealers will be able to offer earlier collection dates during their quieter periods which tends to be the first half of the month. 

It is also absolutely worth doing your research beforehand. Check online reviews and forum sites to gain an idea of the reputations of the vehicle recycler you want to deal with, and don’t be afraid to ask the dealer questions! The vast majority of dealers will be very happy to answer questions.
